1. Issue

The multiplication of Best Practices is a typical example of a global project. The initialization, implementation and closure of such a global project represents a special case in the theory and practice of project management. The current literature – example: Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, issued by the Project Management Institute – does not cover this special case in any depth. The learnings that follow are based on five such global projects managed by myself from 1995 to 2010 in the Holcim cement Group.

The figure shows the five main project steps to be used when selecting and multiplying Best Practices, enhanced by three support functions. The initialization delivers the concept for the Best Practice, followed by the detailed development and a test for practical application. Only then the Best Practice is ready for multiplication. At the end a formal After Action Review is necessary but frequently forgotten. Project Management, IT and Organizational Learning support all five main steps. The numbers in the figure refer to the learnings published in the 13th chapter of the book “Controlling als Inhouse-Consulting” (Springer Gabler 2012, German only).
